The Yellow House

Back in 1997 when I took my first college art class, my professor told me my drawing marks reminded her of Vincent Van Gogh.  I didn’t know the artist that well except for his painting of Starry Night.  I got a book of the letters he wrote to his brother Theo and read the whole thing for an art history class.  In 2001 I was able to see the painting at the MoMA on a trip to NYC with Di.  Many years have passed and my painting and drawing style have changed but Van Gogh’s yellow house in Arles was always on my mind.

After many years of saving, I was finally able to build my own little yellow house.  It’s out in the back yard, next the the prayer garden.  When I sit in my rocking chair, I can see the sun setting behind the gandures bushes in the evenings.  It’s such a relaxing place.

Of course if you like to create, don’t wait until you can have a studio.  Many times I have had to improvise and use a corner of a bedroom or the garage.  But do create a space of your own.  Decorate it with things that make you smile.  Make sure you take time to sit and relax in it everyday.  Make time to daydream…

Spider Mama

Garden Spider 2

Mommy garden spider preparing her egg sack with food for her babies.  Right on time for Fall, she laid her eggs yesterday next to the compost pile and wrapped them in silk.  I’m glad I didn’t hesitate to take her picture.  Her fate is the same as Charlotte’s.

See the little white flowers on the trees? They are guilty of producing the sweet perfumed air every Spring. Yes, I have the best mornings here.

Rain

Oh yeah we got some much needed rain this week.  But this time of the year any morning looks like this: foggy and moist.  The whole garden takes on an aura of mystery and everything looks different.  I went outside barefoot with camera in hand and Niza kitten to keep me company.  I found this hammock ready to lure pests into it.

Then I walked some more and picked up a sweet scent in the air…

Orange Blossom

Yes it’s time to fertilize and if you took my advice 2 weeks ago you should be ready to feed you soil.  If you didn’t, then don’t worry.  You still have time to run and get some.  Because our soil is so sandy, organic slow release works best.  It doesn’t wash away into the aquifer with one shower.  And speaking of the aquifer; remember that everything you put in the soil will eventually end up there…and then end up in your drinking water.
