Happy Birthday Pincushion

sewing homeworkAugust is a special month for me.  Most of my family members and my friends birthdays fall in this month.  Almost every day is cause for celebrating and pictures of parties keep coming into email and social media.  No birthday party is complete without a cake.  So yummy with happy colored frosting and candles.  For some reason it dawned on me the shape of the cake would make a great pincushion and the pins could stand in for candles…

  • Felt for cake
  • Needle
  • Thread
  • Fiberfill
  • Mini pom pom trim
  • Hot glue gun
  • Felt and Velcro for wristband (optional)

Cut 2 circles 2 ½ inches wide for the top and bottom for the cake.  Use a glass, can or bottle as a template.  Cut a rectangle piece 1 1/2 by 8 1/16 inches for the side of the cake.  Sew together the 2 short ends of the rectangle forming a cylinder.  Sew one circle piece on the top.  Do the same for the circle on the bottom, but
stop when there is 1 inch left.  Fill the cushion and then finish sewing. Attach the pom pom strips to the pincushion using the hot glue gun, covering the stitches.

The pincushion can be used alone, but I chose to attach if to a wrist band: Cut a 1 ½ by 8 inch rectangle of felt (I have thin wrists, measure and add 1 – 1 ½ inches to attach Velcro.) Cut Velcro strips 1 ½ long and hot glue to the ends of the strip, one on the top side and the other on the bottom.
